Patrick recalled the name Monica from the file—a family friend of Deacon’s parents who passed information to Jasmine as she gleaned it. Unfortunately, most of the time it was too late. LeClerc had usually moved on.

Patrick sealed the note in a new envelope and did a fair imitation of Jasmine’s handwriting to write Rye’s name across the front. He shoved the ripped envelope in his pocket. He returned everything to its place and let himself out the front door, where he stood for a full thirty seconds before he climbed into the car.
